How to set up a stall
Hints and tips
Once you've decided what issue(s) you want your stall to cover you need to think about what to include on your stall and how best to attract people.Check out our resources page for materials to use. Back to Get Active Ideas
- Put up a banner so that people can see who you are at a glance. If you are a SAAC group you can download our banner or you could design your own.
- If running a food stall, will you give away free food or charge a small amount for items? This is a case of perceived value (it's worth money so must be good) vs. university regulations on selling food.
- Posters and petitions are great for any kind of stall. Posters make the stall attractive and busy, and petitions give people a way to help the suffering they may have just found out about. It is said that you should always offer a solution otherwise people go away feeling helpless and depressed.
- You could also have a laptop playing a video but remember to guard it carefully!
- Make sure you have plenty of leaflets for people to take away with them.
- People (especially students!) love free stuff; badges, stickers, animal-free sweets and bookmarks always go down well.
- Recruit a friend or two to cover the stall when you need a toilet or food break.
- Try not to get into too many debates about 'terrorism' etc, hold your ground but ask politely for them to move on so you can speak with people interested in your cause.
- Last but not least, wear a smile!
It's amazing how much difference your body language makes in getting people up to the stall!
